Too Much Writing Going on; Soaking up the sun rays & a fabulous opportunity

Posted on June 2nd, 2008 in Freelance writing, My Virtual Buddies by Vegan Momma

A few days ago I wrote about another blogging opportunity at Addicted to Writing. I really like writing their even though it is small compared to Vegan Momma. I have one faithful reader, Michele (thanks girl I really appreciate your comments) in my last post I mentioned a position I had applied for. Michele being herself was encouraging, supportive, just what you want from a buddy, right?

A little about myself

I’m a competitive person by nature and my toughest competitor thus far is myself. I’m always pushing myself to do more, and I don’t have time for the weak excuses I tell myself about why I cannot do something. After a chewing out session and a wee time to feel sorry for myself I pick myself and come out swinging.

I have set a lot of goals for myself I don’t reveal them all here but my friend’s those who know me well and read my blog no where this is going. Yes, I’m a dreamer and I’m all about turning them into a reality.

Ok, back to the present…

After 10:00 this morning I took a break from writing. It was such a beautiful day outside I couldn’t resist. The great outdoors kept calling me. It was one of those days that are made for grilling and eating outside. Well, I listened and had a great time hanging with Aiyana. We made veggie burger, grilled potato wedges and soaked up the sun rays.

Later this afternoon I went to the gym, and when I got my daughter I was greeted by a little girl that was very excited to see her mommy. She chattered non-stop. Yep, best gift a mommy can have a child that is excited to see them.

A Nice Surprise

When I checked my email, I got another surprise the website owner I mentioned above contacted me. He’s interested in my writing. Naturally I’m excited this is a huge opportunity the site gets a lot of traffic, has over 19,000 readers in it’s RSS feed. Yep, it’s a big deal.

What I like most is the friendly atmosphere. I’ve been a reader for years, lurking most of the time so I feel honored that he even got back to me. This will be my highest paying job if I receive it. Although I cannot say how I can make on certain posts let’s say I could purchase a couple XBox games and not the cheap games either.

My mind is all over the place right now because of its significance however I’ll save my ramblings for my freelance writing website.

I think we should take the time to thank those who mean a lot to us and although she probably doesn’t know it I would say regarding freelance writing the person I’ve always payed close attention to is Michele.

Michele is a talented freelance writer and I discovered her virtual home early in my quest for everything freelance writing related. She’s friendly and her personality comes through in her post. If you haven’t checked our her virtual home stop by and say hello.

Seven Things You Don’t Know But I Do

Posted on November 14th, 2007 in My Virtual Buddies, Personal by Vegan Momma

I saw this meme over at Pete’s Digital Photography home. Please stop by and check out the amazing pictures he takes with his GPS Camera phone. I thought it was a great meme so I decided that I would participate.

  1. I Love Body Modifications. Shocked? Don’t be. My fascination began when I was around eight years old and has continued to this present day of course being an avid reader I found that even in the Victorian age people had piercings. In the 1890’s women wore piercings they were called “Bosom Rings”. Roman centurions pierced their nipples to display potency and vigor. Gladiators, were treated as slaves, and they were pierced also. Do you even want to know where? ;-)About ten years ago I purchased the book Modern Primitives. I loved the book. I loaned it to a friend apparently they loved it also. I never received that book back.I had five body piercings. All I’ll say is they lined up with the chakra points. I still have one (navel.) I removed the other four during pregnancy. I didn’t want to. I still have my body jewelry. I most likely will get everything repierced and no none of my piercings were visible. I got mine done in the early 1990’s.
  2. I’m extremely direct. I expect people to be the same with me. If I’ve done something that is bothering you please tell me about it otherwise I have no idea how to fix it. Please don’t talk about me behind my back. If I find out about it you’ve lost my respect. I’m also very perceptive.
  3. I’m very competitive. If you challenge me to something, I will take you seriously, and I’ll do my best. Hopefully I’ll beat you. Regardless I’ll have a great time and I’ll thank you for the challenge. ;-)
  4. Yes I really am that busy. I don’t say it to blow people off I’m just one busy woman. I’m a business owner, mom, student, volunteer. Trust me I am busy. I’m living life to it’s fullest. I do my best to follow up with people if I forget remind me. I won’t be offended. :-)
  5. I actually have a social life. Yes, it’s true! I might not blog about it because well in some areas I’m actually a very private person. That is one of them.
  6. Regarding a partner besides the intelligence, compassion, and all around great person I’m attracted to someone that in excellent shape. Most of the activities I’m involved with require a high level of endurance. I want someone that will join me not sit on the sidelines. That being said the last person I dated was overweight by at least twenty pounds. I loved them for whom they were as a person. They eventually lost that weight, but I never pushed however, I was always there to support them because they did want to make healthier changes in their life. They did. They’re not vegetarian, but they consume fewer animals when I first met them they said they would never be eating more fruits and veggies. They eat a lot of fewer animals and more fruits and vegetables.

I didn’t preach I did lead by example. They saw the difference in our energy levels. They were already active before, but the changes they’ve seen with simple changes in their diet has been amazing to them. I’m proud of my buddy.

You don’t have to be vegetarianto be healthy, you can be an unhealthy vegetarian, however you need to make healthy choices despite your eating lifestyle. Many of the unhealthy choices people make eventually catch up with them as they become older check out the health statistics. You can be old without health problems. Guess what health problems effect younger people also. Take care of yourself! If you make wise choices now you more than likely will have less problems as you age.

  7. I’ve worked as a physical trainer. Occasionally I still do. I’m a tough but am extremely supportive. I’ll be your #1 cheerleader but you will have to meet me halfway and show me that you want to make changes in your lifestyle. Talk is cheap. I want to see action.

Alright those are my seven things. I’m going to tag a few people.

  1. De’Moments - Chi Nee’ is an awesome woman and extremely creative. She is a friendly and makes all her visitors feel welcome.
  2. JO-N at Shower Your Children With Love - an inspirational blogger. I met her through De’Moments. She is always dropping positive thoughts at her virtual home.
  3. Sibbia of Seeing Is Believing; Believing is Achieving - Another positive soul. Her posts are thought provoking. I truly enjoy stopping by her virtual home.

One thing these bloggers have in common is their are nice people and their personality shines through in their posts. I truly enjoy my visits.

Google Drops My Vegan Momma Page Rank One More Point & My Other Websites Increase

Posted on October 27th, 2007 in My Virtual Buddies, Personal by Vegan Momma

A few days ago I noticed that Vegan Momma Page Rank dropped another notch. When I checked a few days ago it has a PR of two.  A few of my other blogging buddies received a hit also. Their websites are good quality websites. I still have my sponsor Vivid Seats in my sidebar. That’s not coming down. I really like Vivid Seats and am happy that they will provide my readers $5 off simply by using them as ticket brokers.

My traffic has not decreased it keeps increasing. :-)

Google Page Rank

  1. I was happy to see that Thomas the Tech Evangelist website now has a PR of 5.
  2. Teeni of the Vaguetarian tearoom now has a PR of 4.
  3. Calamity of Calmityville now has a PR of 3. Check out her Sims Stories.
  4. Pete has a fascinating website you can view his world from his GPS cameraphone. His website now has a PR of 1.

See, even though I don’t get into the PR thing I can be happy for my blog buddies. ;-)

Yesterday one of my close friends in real life notified me that all my niche websites had risen. The majority now have a PR of three. I don’t post on them as much as I do Vegan Momma but they still receive a high amount of traffic. In fact two of them outrank Vegan Momma with traffic and they were created in May. I don’t post on them often perhaps three times, if that, weekly. My niche websites focus on topics that I’m extremely passionate about. I believe it shows in my writing.

Google PR 2

I have two that now have a PR of 2. I rarely post on them. Those websites are being shelved until next year. They still receive a lot of traffic and comments on some of the articles I’ve written but I just don’t have the time right now.

Google PR 5

The biggest jump was for one niche website that has not been publicized. As with the other websites the information provided is informative. It can help people. Which is the reason I created all my niche websites. Anyway that one now ranks at 5.

I Started Creating My Niche Website in May 2007

My niche websites are fairly new. Many of them were started in May, a few were started recently. On all my websites my articles are usually long. I don’t like giving people tidbits if you are new person seeking advice on alternative health or nutrition you need a lot of information. I do my best to supply that.

One thing you won’t find on my website is me writing about headline news just to gain traffic. I have to be genuinely interested in something to write about it. I have seen some people do fairly well using this method. I don’t visit them often simply because they are not writing about what interests me. I strongly believe I can do just as well writing about issues that I’m passionate about. A few of those websites are already proving that I am correct.

My websites do receive a fair amount of traffic. On average the majority of my traffic is received from sources other than search engines. I averaged $60 monthly via adsense on Vegan Momma.

Guess what? The niche websites that I monetize I was making money at a PR of 0. I made more with them than Vegan Momma. You don’t need a high PR to make money or receive a lot of traffic. You do need to market your websites effectively. Sitting round waiting for something magical to happen is not going to work unless you are very popular already or someone popular recognizes you.

You don’t need to write paid post either. I write the occasional review but I honestly don’t want to do a lot of them. I still have to write an article to receive a payment. I don’t write reviews on those niche websites. Affiliate marketing is the main way I make money online. I’ve made more with them than with the few paid posts I have done or with Adsense.

I do believe Google has every right to operate their company the way they want to however if I do disagree with some of their policies I definitely won’t change my website just to meet their approval. Guess what even if my rank returns it still won’t change my opinion. I had the same opinion even before my rank went down.

I’m not going to say that I run my website the way I like because that is not completely true. I listen to what my readers have to say in doing so I’m able to improve my website.

HomeSchooling: Exploring Nature

Wasp

Wasp: Black and White Wasp - Monobia Quadridens

While my daughter and I were outside this morning we discovered this wasp. I’m not sure what type it is but I’ll soon find out. Update! Beth at the Eclectic Studio Cafe identified this was as the black and white wasp - monobia quadridens. Thanks Beth! I’m getting ready to purchase the book Insects: Their Natural History and Diversity: With a Photographic Guide to Insects of Eastern North America. I checked out the reviews from a variety of sources and this seems like a keeper.

Insects Their Natural History & Diversity

I’m getting a good deal this book is priced at $95 but Amazon has it available for $59.85. I’m saving 37% of the price. I’m an Amazon Prime member so my shipping is free. Since I live close to the facility I’ll be getting this book tomorrow.

Homeschooling? Who Would’ve Thought…

My four-year old daughter is home schooled. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do but that was definitely out of the question when I was working out of the home. This school year would be the test. I wasn’t sure that I would be able to handle being a business owner working from home and home schooling my daughter. Although she has always been taught at home adding “home schooled” made it “official”.

I don’t believe in forcing children to learn. I believe you can get better results using other methods. Everyone does not learn the same way. They all learn at different paces and the key, I think, is tapping into what they find interesting.  You can present education so they really don’t think of it as “boring”. I did very well in school and in elementary school my brother, and I was taught in a home school setting. It wasn’t at home but with a group of other parents/children.

My brother and I excelled. My brother and I transferred to a traditional school our junior year in high school and the boredom set in. I wasn’t challenged, and the work was too easy for me although I was taken “hard courses” I wanted to be stimulated in another way.

I see the same with my daughter. My daughter thinks are sessions are fun, and she is constantly entertained. When it’s time to get serious she will but don’t expect her to be serious always. She’s four years old after all and her attention span, at times, is all over the place. Actually, She started learning to read when she was three these days she tries to spell anything she says. She’s a lot like myself at that age. I had an insatiable thirst for knowledge I still do.

I have to be honest when I say I have a hard time keeping up with her with Spanish. Not a day goes by when she is not rattling something off in Spanish I tell her to slow down as I hunt around for my Spanish dictionary so that I can interpret the words that I have not caught, lol.

Frog Watch USA

Last evening as I was scouring the internet for cool & interesting ways to teach my daughter I came across this website Frogwatch USA. You can find Frogwatch USA on the National Wildlife Federation’s website.

What’s Frogwatch USA? I copied this excerpt from their website…

Frogwatch USA is a frog and toad monitoring program that gives YOU the opportunity to help scientists conserve amphibians! With as little as 20 minutes a week you can collect essential information to protect frogs and toads.

This long-term amphibian study, managed by the National Wildlife Federation in partnership with the United States Geological Survey, will increase awareness of amphibian decline and will give you the opportunity to be directly involved in gathering information that can ultimately lead to practical and workable ways to help stop the decline of these important species.

I instantly thought about Pelf when I came across this website. If you haven’t checked out this beautiful biologist what are you waiting for? You need to check out her website. Pelf is a wonderful soul who does a lot of work with humans and animals. Aiyana often asks me to check out Ms. Pelf’s page so she can look at the “cute terrapins.” Pelf she thinks you are cool because you are so nice to “her turtles.” That brought about a great discussion on turtles, tortoise, and terrapins.

Anyway back to Frog Watch USA I wish I had known about this early this year I most likely would have registered our location to be part of this watch. We see plenty of frogs and toads. So you don’t have a lot of frog’s & toads in your area they have a section that shows you how to attract more of them in your area. Naturally, there will be some places where you won’t be able to.

My daughter is excited about this project. She’s also happy that she can help nice people (like Ms. Pelf) study animals. I’m also picking up a book about frog’s & toads. I’m not sure which one I’ll purchase yet. I still have research to do. I told Aiyana that we needed to be ready to identify the variety that we might see hence the need to purchase this book. That’s going to be part of her “homework” aka “funwork” identifying frogs. She already can identify a large variety of wild herbs and weeds. Aiyana is already asking me when the book will arrive because she really needs to know about them right away, lol.

If someone had told me two years ago that I would be homeschooling my daughter I would have laughed. I didn’t think it was possible although it’s something I’ve always wanted to do, and to be honest I did not think I would be able to handle it when I resigned from my position and started working for myself part-time .

I’m proof that a single mom who happens to be a business owner can home school also. Of course it’s challenging but thankfully I’m stubborn and I enjoy turning You Can’t into Yes I Can!
