RSS Spotlight

Posted on September 11th, 2007 in Mentoring by Vegan Momma

If you look at the left hand side bar you will see that Imaginif is still in the RSS Spotlight.  I mentioned them in Ebay Does Vegan Momma Good, Internet Safety, and Effective Stumbling, etc. I didn’t forget to take them down yesterday but since do a lot to try and keep our children safe I think they need more recognition.  They will be in my spotlight for the entire month of September.

I thought about it over the weekend and for me it just makes sense.  I love children, I volunteer as a mentor I want to do as much as possible to make sure we recognize our children and for me recognizing Imaginif is one small way that I can help out.

Recognizing Non-Profit Organizations

giving-hands

I cannot believe I hadn’t thought about this sooner but thanks to Pelf who does a lot to help others I’m writing this post. Pelf recently participated in a Blogathon where, as of July 31st, she raised $810 for the Eden Handicap Service Centre.

You can also catch her on her charity based blog The Giving Hands. I really appreciate all that you are doing to help others Pelf! Thank you!

I recently received a sponsored review where I can write about my favorite charities. How fabulous is that? How I can help my favorite charities through my website has been on my mind a lot.

Eventually I’m going to link to charities that I’m involved with here on Vegan Momma. Of course I won’t be charging them anything and they will have a permanent spot on my sidebar. That’s the main reason I moved the side bar to each side.

This won’t be happening any time soon, but by this fall the places I volunteer with will hopefully be featured on this website. I say hopefully because I have to make sure it’s fine. Although I don’t see why it would be a problem. I’ll definitely be featuring them in my web posts and hopefully I’ll be able to include some videos.

Many non profit organizations struggle to receive the funding they need to continue their operations. I know often the money come out of the volunteers own pockets. I know for a fact this is the case because I do the same thing with the organizations I’m involved with.

The activities that I provided for my mentees, the snacks, all that came out of my own pocket and that was fine. I also used to work with the United Way. I saw directly how the donations people sent helped out many organizations.

I love helping others I just want to do more. I’m constantly thinking of ways that I can do this since I can only give so much time and money I believe recognizing them on my websites will do this although I do my part financially and through actual volunteering I would love to pass this opportunity onto others.

Question: What do you think would make you click more a text link ad for the charity or a picture?

Gym Day

Movie: Are we There Yet?Would it surprise anyone if I said I didn’t make it to the gym yesterday? I know it didn’t surprise me. I did work out at home. I’ve been playing catchup this weekend.

I was planning to put the finishing touches on my video when I arrived home Sunday from dropping off my mentees at camp but when I arrived home (after seven hours of driving) I was too tired! Gah!

Yes I was driving for seven hours! The four-hour ride into seven-hour nightmare, lol. Thomas - Technical Blogger it looks like I have my “Are We There Yet story; unfortunately, I have no time to post it now because I am off to the gym.

Upcoming Posts

I’ll be doing spotlight posts on two fabulous bloggers tomorrow so be sure to check out those entries.

Minor Achievement

I wrote on all six of my blogs yesterday. Who cares? LOL for some reason that made me happy. I don’t know why and it wasn’t my intention of writing on every single one but it happened.

You know what I’m realizing? I really need to make time for myself. I always say I will make the time but actually doing that is an entirely different story, lol. Working out in the gym is my me time. I enjoy it immensely.

Let me get out of here before another project rears it’s demanding head and I feel obligated to stay home and complete it. You know what I have a demanding boss! Oh that’s right I am the boss. Pfft!

Question: How do you spend your “me time”? If you’re like myself and struggle with the “me time” what changes can you make?

Making Time For Mentoring

Mentoring

A big part of being a great mentor is listening to what you’re mentees have to say. Wow, that’s similar to parenting. :-)

At times, it can be hard finding the time to speak or hang out with my mentee D. I haven’t seen her for a few weeks, and I miss her a lot. I have been talking to her on the phone. In her case, she already has quite a few positive mentors (family) members in her life so she physically doesn’t need me as much as some of the other mentees might.

I still take the time to talk to her and she calls me often. I really think it’s important to keep those lines of communication open, and I do think our relationship might change as she becomes older.

Dare To Be Different?

As my long term readers know I was a group mentor this past school year and now I’ve moved on to one on one mentoring. I worked with six fabulous sixth grade girls. They are all brilliant, and they each had their own personalities. Finding the right way to reach them was a challenge.

Something that my mentee, Stacy (not her real name) and I shared in common was our love of the Harry Potter series. Stacy would actually read anything written by J. K. Rowling’s so for me this was my way to interact with her. Even if I weren’t a Harry Potter fan, I would have become one since I knew this was something she was interested in.

She actually quizzed me to see whether I really had read the series based on my answers I guess I passed the quiz. The simple fact that I shared a common interest really opened up the doors of our communication. She finally had someone to talk to about the series, and other things in her life. Her friends and some of her family members thought she was a “freak” or “weird” to be reading such nonsense.

Dare to be Different

I told her throughout life you will find people that will, unfortunately, form an inaccurate opinion about
