Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “Six Principles of Nonviolence” laid out in Dr. King’s book Stride Toward Freedom:

1. Nonviolence is a way of life for courageous people

2. Nonviolence seeks to win friendship and understanding

3. Nonviolence seeks to defeat injustice, not people

4. Nonviolence holds that suffering can educate and transform

5. Nonviolence chooses love instead of hate

6. Nonviolence believes that the universe is on the side of justice

Darfur Region Peace Plan in Jeopardy

Posted on May 5th, 2006 in Human Rights by Vegan Momma

ABUJA, Nigeria - Two of three rebel groups battling the Sudanese government for control of the country’s Darfur region resisted intense international pressure on Friday to sign an accord aimed at ending a conflict that has claimed at least 180,000 lives.

In New York, U.N. Secretary-General
Kofi Annan urged all countries to press the warring parties to reach agreement but warned the international community has an obligation to protect civilians in Darfur, by force if need be.

Abdelwahid Muhamed El Nur of the main rebel Sudan Liberation Army walked out of the negotiations before dawn Friday saying: “We are not going to sign.”

The action came shortly after a similar declaration from the small Justice and Equality Movement, while a splinter rebel faction said it needed time to consult with colleagues in Sudan. more

Habitat for Humanity

Have you heard of Habitat for Humanity They are a nonprofit Christian organization that builds decent homes for low-income families.

In a few months I will be volunteering my time to help build houses for families in need. If I’m allowed I will be sure to take ‘before’ and ‘after’ pictures of the house. You can check out their fact sheet here.
Did you know that by the end of 2005, more than 1 million people worldwide will live in decent, affordable Habitat for Humanity houses?

Holiday Thoughts…

During the holidays I think about people and animals even more. You know the one’s that are overlooked and considered worthless. That’s one reason you will see me volunteering even more at soup kitchens or homeless shelters. I want people to know that someone truly cares about them. You will also find me adopting an animal, volunteering with local organizations, or sending out information to my real life friends/aquaintances about various animal rights issues.

Our Daily Bread

Posted on September 8th, 2005 in Human Rights by Vegan Momma

Our Day of Caring (last Thursday) went very well. I took pictures. It was wonderful helping those who in need. I did not take pictures of our guest but I did take ‘before’ and after pictures. Our Daily Bread serves, on average, 600 people daily.
As I was walking downtown, to another office Tuesday morning one of the guests remembered me and started talking to me. I chatted with him for a few minutes. He wanted to know when I would return. I told him in a few weeks. A few weeks, he said why that is too long! :-) He told me how nice it was to come in there and see another friendly smiling face. There are many that do have jobs that come for assistance with food but they are low paying jobs. The meals really help them out. When I returned to my office I saw them again. He sells newspapers. I waved at him and another man I recognized from our Daily Bread and told them I would see them in a few weeks.
