Damien (Jr. Gong) Marley: Welcome to Jamrock

I’ve heard that one a lot. A very inaccurate assumption. I wrote about this in Fear of a Loc’d Planet. My loc’s are starting to grow longer. I rarely pay attention to my hair but now and again I look and think, “Wow, I love my loc’s!” They are creeping down my back now. This December will mark one year that I’ve worn my natural hair in loc’s. They aren’t cultivated my locs are freeform locs. I mainly let them do their thing. “In the past I’ve heard the “loc’s are filthy comments from relative who just haven’t enough sense to keep their mouth shut.

I also hear “You must love reggae!” and “So are you rasta now?” Although I know a lot about the Rastafari movement, I’m not a rasta. It’s true I do love reggae. I started listening to it early thanks to my father. Bob Marley was someone he listened to not only for his music but the powerful messages that were weaved throughout his lyrics. Since I respect my father, I started to be attentive to what Bob Marley was saying.

I liked what I was hearing so much I learned more about him and the rastafarian movement. The main thing I respect about my father is his willingness to

Locs: Woman with curly locs

Here are a few pictures from Saturday’s Juneteenth celebration at Natural Images Hair Studio. The history of Juneteenth was discussed and that was followed by a natural hair show. There were two traditional African dances performed, and to end the event there was a singer. I’ll have a detailed writeup about the event soon but until then I leave you with a few pictures.

I usually get my loc’s maintenance (usually means palmrolling of loc’s) every two weeks. I rinse my hair daily. It’s been over a month since I’ve been to Natural Images Hair Studio. I just don’t have the time. I know how to maintain my own loc’s so, for now, that is what I’m going to have to do. That is, until my schedule slows down. It’s great to have me time and I definitely consider having that done by someone else me time. :-) My loc’s are growing fast. I can now pull them back into a tiny ponytail. Summer will be here before I know it. It will be time to pull out my gele’s (pronounced gay lay, African headwrap) very soon. During the warmer months you will usually find me wearing gele’s. :-)

My locs actually seem locked. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised I wash them daily. I really need to start taking pictures of them. I have noticed that my hair is growing a lot faster. It’s always grown at a nice clip but now it’s pretty amazing. Who knows it might be the fact the my daily intake is onlyI’m thinking it’s only fresh vegetables and fruits? I have noticed that my hair is (seeingly) getting thicker.

I’m really enjoying my loc’s. They are low-maintenance which is just the style I need for my busy schedule.

Since I work out almost every single day I was finding out that my locs constantly became untwisted, at the roots. I always take a shower after my workouts but was growing tired of the unraveling it took me a while to remember that I experienced the same problem got really tired of constantly re-twisting my locked hair so I tried a different approach. I had my locs started at Natural Images Hair Studio. It’s a  great place for naturals. They’ll definitely pamper you and the prices are reasonable. If you are in the Maryland area check it out!
