Exercise: An icepack, anyone?

Posted on July 15th, 2008 in Exercise, Videography by Vegan Momma

This week is starting off well regarding my gym workouts. Currently I’m hanging out in my daughter’s room; legs are sore. Yesterday was leg day. I worked out with D (which is always great) we push each other and the time passes by quickly. We spent a lot of time with hack squats. My goal is to lift as much as I was lifting with hack squats as I did when I was in my twenties. I have about 150 pounds to go before I get to that point. My goal is to get there by the end of next month. It’s definitely doable. I really don’t work my legs hard they are very strong. Since I have someone that I work out with consistently I’m starting to focus on getting back to a point I’m comfortable with.

The ice packs came out yesterday something I always have handy for the times I work my muscles harder or do different exercises. Cardio is something I do daily. I have a very active five-year old remember? A lot of our time is spent outdoors.

The song above is Straight to Video by Mindless Self Indulgence. It’s something I downloaded into iTunes. I originally heard it on YouTube while checking out a WOW video made by a player who was deleting his epic geared level 70 toons. I’ll be uploading the song to my iPod nano later this evening so I can have when I work out tomorrow. I’m not stuck into one genre of music so you’ll find a variety of music in my collection. If I like, something I’ll listen to it.

If you are an iTunes you can download a cool feature that shows you the lyrics of the songs you listen to It’s called Sing that iTune. Of course you have to be on a Mac. I’m sure they have similar apps for Windows computers.

Mindless Self Indulgence - Straight To Video
All aboard
Hit the road
All the bullshit
Can’t be ignored

It’s hard to place
In my face
No emotion

All the problems
Make me wanna go
Like a bad girl
Straight to video

Little darling
Welcome to the show
You’re a failure
Played in stereo

Hiedi ho
Here we go
No solution
Strong undertow

Quite unfair
Quite a pair
No box office

All the problems
Make me wanna go
Like a bad girl
Straight to video

Little darling
Welcome to the show
You’re a failure
Played in stereo

I never noticed
No, never noticed
You’re so amazing
So amazing

I never noticed
No, never noticed
You’re so amazing
So amazing

All aboard
Hit the road
All aboard
Here we go

All the problems
Make me wanna go
Like a bad girl
Straight to video

Little darling
Welcome to the show
You’re a failure
Played in stereo

I never noticed
No, never noticed
You’re so amazing
So amazing

I never said it
No, never said
You’re suffocating
Suffocating

I never noticed
No, never noticed
You’re beauty’s fading
Fading

I keep a moving target for myself to motivate me towards working out. Every time I am approaching a target, I just set myself something more difficult to work towards.

@Sarika@Graphic Tees - That’s a great way to keep moving! I like that in fact, I use that occasionally.

I have different motivators during my workouts occasionally I’ll have a mental image of how a body part will look after x amount of time. I’m also motivated by the fact that it improves my overall well being, and I have a great workout buddy so I really look forward to the times we work out together. We make each other work harder and since there is someone else I we can squeeze out extra help because we’ve got each others back.

Nice job on the working out buddy! I’m struggling to get in the gym myself lately but I’m trying to take it easy because I have an 8K this weekend.

    Hi Vegan Momma,
I heard on radio4 today (program about ramblers) that after hard exercise, if you put ur legs up against a wall or somthing and lie on your back, it helps to drain the lactic acid away from the muscles and helps them recover / and there not so saw the next day,
    Kind Regards,
    Chloe

Hi Opal - that pain will be worth it in the end. I don’t do weights right now (the fuel crisis keeps me away from the gym totally) - but I can remember how it feels when you’ve used a heavier weight than usual. The results you get from squats are so worth it though.

I’m still not cheating - off for my walk and pilates now.

    Opal, LOL!

Hack squats…. even when I was in my twenties, I wouldn’t have the guts to do the “s” word. I remember my last excuse to my trainer was “bad knees”.

I ain’t gonna lie…that video creeped me out a little bit. Maybe it was the, er, “grown version of Mr. Bill” guy or something. But as far as squats go, I feel you. As punishing as they are, you can’t do without ‘em. Hack squats are a favorite of mine too.

It is quite difficult to work out in initial stages but once you are doing it regularly , you start enjoing the work as you tend to feel lot fresh and light.

Sounds like you need to be sitting in a bathtub of ice water, not your daughters room! :) Legs always hurt the worst after a workout it seems and you can’t very well walk around on your hands to get about the house! Hope you feel better!

Way to go with working out! That’s so great! And if you need an ice pack, that means you’re really working your muscles :)

I just joined a gym a few months ago and I love it. My motivator is the TV. I don’t really work out well with just music so TV is a fabulous resort for me!

Right now I’m in the endurance part of the weight training cycle, lighter weight, higher reps. When strength training, I reduce DONS (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness) by warming up and cooling down, making sure the intensity level isn’t too high, and providing plenty of recovery time for each muscle group.

That’s one of my favorite MSE songs. Shut Me Up is another one I’m always playing. The Shut Me Up video was directed by the incredible Jhonen Vasquez.

If you want to try something that is a serious leg workout in a way you’ve never worked your legs and a great cardio workout at the same time try a Kung Fu based aerobics. My wife and I put out a video on it years ago. Need to redo it on dvd since it’s been so long since we did it dvd wasn’t around. But it’s a totally different workout and it will work your gluts like nothing else. Hopefully we’ll redo the video one day.

Great post, good job on trying to keep fit and in shape. I want to give you a tip for you while your working out. Most people agree that listening to music and really improve your work out session. I take it just a tad further and watch TV or music videos on MTV, especially if your on the elliptical or the jogger.

That’s great about the workout routine! Trust me the soreness is always worst in the beginning and as your muscles get used to it the lactic acid will decrease and you won’t be as sore.

    Keep up the good work!
