Parenting: What’s up with the lying

Posted on June 30th, 2008 in Family, My little Angel by Vegan Momma

My daughter has been going through a phase when she doesn’t want to tell the truth. I have no idea where she’s getting it from however, she is definitely working it. I’m so lucky. A few days ago I told her to go to the bathroom and wash her hands. It was almost time to eat.

Me: Aiyana go to the bathroom and wash up it’s time to eat.

Aiyana: I’ve already done that Mommy I told her to go to the bathroom and wash her hands.”

Me: Thinking to myself, I just saw you come from downstairs I know you didn’t go to the bathroom.

Aiyana: Aiyana skips into the kitchen smiling.

Me: I think I need to pull out my truth detector I said as I continued to set the table

Aiyana: What’s a truth detector, Mommy?

Me: Oh it tells me whether you are telling the truth or not

Aiyana: Runs to the bathroom, I didn’t wash my hands mommy! I don’t want the truth detector

The funny thing is I do have a truth detector, but it isn’t a gadget I can always tell when she is not telling the truth.

Yes, Opal, mothers always know what her children are up to. My son’s friend told him to lie to me to get money. My son never did. He told me the whole truth! Peer influence is very great nowadays and I’m worried that children would be influenced by their peers more than their parents.

    That’s cute!

You wait till her truth detector kicks in and she’ll find out you didn’t have any truth detector gadgets.

No, but really though. That was cute. I can almost see it play out.

I think it’s a phase that all children go through. It sounds suspiciously like me and my sister when we were growing up lol!

It’s nice you’ve handled the situation pretty nicely….
Other moms would just let it pass and so kids tend to lie continuously not thinking of its consequence…

    Cute story : ]

I might have to use the “truth detector” sometime at my house.

Yeah i agree with the other posters. It’s good you didn’t let her get away with lying and keep on top of things. Parents tend to just let things slide and it causes the problems with the child to continue and only get worse.

That’s a cute story. I wouldn’t worry too much for harmless lies like this. I mean, having to go washing your hands upstairs when you are hungry is a bummer, kid or adult ;)

My sisters been having a problem with her step daughter lying all the time. I’d tell her to use the “truth detector”, but I don’t think it will work on a 14 year old. Hmmm…
