Keyword borderline spam; I’ve installed the WordPress keywordluv plug-in
I’m fairly lax when it come to leaving comments on my blog as long as you leave that’s not spam I’ll let your comment stay however I’m really getting tired of people leaving keywords without a name.
When I leave comments on other blogs I usually use “Vegan Momma,” sometimes “Healthy Tips,” however, I always add my name, Opal Tribble, within that name. It personalizes my name and gives the blogger whom I’m visiting more than a keyword. I just want to see a name attach so when I’m addressing the commentator, which I try to do. I’m not addressing a business or an inanimate object.
I know some people don’t like keyword stuffers period and will promptly delete their comments. My dilemma is a lot of those who use keywords leave great comments. I don’t want to delete their posts. Personally I don’t see it any different from a person leaving their personal blog info in the link. It’s still advertising the only difference is your advertising your personal blog whereas others are advertising a business.
The majority of my comments are left on personal blogs many of us don’t appreciate keywords. It comes across as spam regardless of how thought out the comment is. Earlier today I installed a plug in created by Stephen Cronin called keyword love you have to leaver your name along with a the keyword for me to accept your post.
Regarding his plug in Stephen Cronin said…
This plugin is really to help your commentators, so you need to tell them how to use it. By default, the plugin adds a message to the comment form telling users to enter YourName@YourKeywords in the comment field.
Comments are always welcome but please leave something along with your keywords if you don’t I will start deleting them. Many thanks to Stephen Cronin for creating this valuable keywordluv plug-in.

Update: I tested it out and it worked fine. Check out the screenshot above. As you can see my keyword link is still highlighted however, there is an name attached to the keyword.
It goes without saying if you haven’t read my entries and are just spamming than yes your post will be deleted.

this is great, and of course i had to leave a comment to test it out as well

Great idea! I am just getting my site up and have to figure out how to add comment sections, do-follow tags and now … CommentLuv. Thanks for the tip!
on May 29th, 2008 at 1:01 pm
I actually change their names to ‘Unknown Commenter’ and remove the keywords and sometime go as far as changing the business URL they drop to this one if the comment seems to be legit. The reason why I remove the keyword and URL is in most cases the person doing the commenting is being paid by the slime buckets that try and get a free link.
Good plug in, but I prefer to let folks register for easier commenting or to just fill out the regular 3 forms (Name, e-mail, and URL). All the extra stuff to make a comment would detour me from going any further.
But that’s just my opinion, and you’re entitled to it.

dara, I like it a lot.
Maria, Glad you like it. There are a lot of great plug-ins available.
MacBros,
Just because a person pays someone to leave a comment (as long as it’s well thought out) doesn’t make them slimebuckets.
That’s a broad generalization. It’s just another form of marketing. As long as a person leaves a great comment I really don’t care if they are getting free advertising. It’s a comment.
With the website I write for occasionally I leave comments on other peoples website using the websites url and my name.
Think of it this way you get free advertising when you write a comment on someone elses blog and your websites are monetized. What’s the difference. ;-)
Not everyone who leaves keywords are hiring others to post the comments some of them do it themselves.
Oh by the way I received an advertiser on another one of my websites from one of the bloggers that were leaving keywords on my website. I’m definitely not going to penalize my commentators because they make money off their blog or business.
I rarely register for blogs I just never liked doing that. That’s my personal preference.
on May 29th, 2008 at 4:41 pm
I use it too. Besides that I removed nofollow tag from my blog. 2 good thigs to make your traffic BIGGER ;)

I’ve just recently discovered this keyword luv plugin and I’ve got to say. I love it.
I’ve never before commented on blogs. Always considered it wasting time when I had so much to do. But now I can read a nice article, and a comment and participate and I’m doing a little SEO at the same time so I certainly don’t feel guilty anymore.
Thanks so much for adding this plugin. I think it’s a great idea.

Hi Opal,
Glad to hear your stand on commenting. I’m always thinking twice when leaving comments. It’s just that a lot of people instantly tag me as spam whenever they see keywords, just like MacBros above.
I have been blocked by Akismet a couple of times now, but after emailing them and explaining myself they were kind enough to let me slide with a warning. There’s another spam blocker that I can;t get out of, though, don;t know what it is.
Yes, I use keywords to promote my site. Plain and simple. But I make sure I add to the discussion (yea I lax sometimes, I know  ).
Anyhoo, thanks for allowing your readers to get some linkluv. Keep it up and best of luck!
to MacBros, we’re not all slimebuckets, we’re just trying to make a living.

Czytelnia,
I use that one also it is a great plugin. Of course, you’ll have people that take advantage and spam everyone with junk, but I don’t feel that I should punish all my readers because of a few people. I just take the extra time and weed out the unwanted spam.
Phil,
It’s definitely not a waste of time if you have something to contribute. I cannot tell you how many times people have come to my website simply because of a comment I’ve left. I consider this my personal blog, but I do have other websites that I make money with. If you leave information that adds to the conversation people will visit. Even on my business websites they do have a personal feel.
Dollardude,
There are so many ways you can increase your traffic. I do some of them here although I have to admit I’m not as proactive as I should I just don’t have that type of time. :-)
Rivers,
I think some people forget to realize that everyone can use keywords in their signature if they want to. A few of my friends do this already. I use appropriate keywords that are relevant for my websites.
I even had a few business owners that have requested that I removed comments from some of those they paid to leave comments on this blog. They did not feel it was appropriate looking at the comments they were borderline, but I had let them slide. I honored their request and removed them. It definitely shows that all business owners have others leave comments for them aren’t slime buckets.
I actually believe many care about the comments that are left since it is a reflection of their business. I’m a business owner I don’t hire people to leave comments for me. I leave them myself. :-)
The majority of my real life friends are also business owners and for them this is just another way they can market their website and yes quite a few of them do it themselves.

I just found out about keywordluv and I love it! I think its just so much more aesthetically pleasing! I’m just doing a bit more research on it before I install it.. so thanks for the informative post! :)

Hi Vegan mamma,
I’m so glad you have added keywordluv.
Most people are hitting the blogs with names like ’seo’ however this plugin means you can get links from with your keyword text, and you can leave a name… promoting more comments and rewarding those. I think all parties win.

I like it. I was thinking of having a no keyword policy on my blogs, because I just don’t like the comments from Real Estate NY etc., but this a good solution. And that Stephen Cronin has an interesting blog.

I’m new to blogging but this plug-in sounds great! I agree it’s nice to have a person’s name on the comment, not just key words; yet it seems only fair that the anchor text fit their web site. Thanks for this information!

I actually love this plugin. It has really motivated me to get out and take the time to explore the blogosphere, and receive a little link love when I contribute something useful to the conversation.
Thank you for adding the plugin.
on June 7th, 2008 at 8:50 pm
It’s basic SEO. Keyword targeted backlinks have tremendous value. It provides value for commenters, who provide value by adding content. It’s win-win. Everyone benefits. As long as you’re not simply spamming or linking to a spam site, there’s no problem. The idea that it’s somehow inherently bad or wrong to make a living is absurd.
A bit more advanced SEO is to then link back to the page you commented on (from a different site so that the link is not lessened in value by being reciprocal). This boosts that page’s PR and keyword authority which increases the value of the link to your site. Another win-win for both parties.

Thanks everyone for stopping by to comment on this post.
I agree it’s not spamming especially when people are adding to the conversation which is what usually happens for those who use keywords on my blog to punish a person simply because they are making a living is ridiculous.
on June 11th, 2008 at 9:12 am
I agree completely with Victor J’s comments here - there is a win-win for the blog owner and the commenter. There are so many blogs out there that it make sense for you to spend your time making useful comments where you are likely to most benefit. I’ve been using the keywordluv plug-in for a little while and the feedback is really positive. Where people simply leave a “nice post” or similar short comment I remove their link and if I think there site is interesting and of value to my readers then I’ll mention their site in a reply (minus the http and www bit) so people can choose to type or copy and paste it in themselves.

The keywordLuv plugin is great, I am a huge fan. I have found that it generates a lot of comments. It also makes leaving a comment like this, where I want to promote one of my sites feel a lot more honest. Cheers for using it.
on June 23rd, 2008 at 1:57 pm
KeywordLuv is like a personal “thank you” to your visitor. I like the concept although I wonder if it brings too many comments.
on June 26th, 2008 at 3:08 pm
I’m with you. I was getting really sick of seeing people leaving these long tail keywords for names. I have deleted some in the past because of this but I think this plugin is the answer to my problems.
on June 29th, 2008 at 9:34 am
I think keywordluv is the way forward. It encourages more genuine comments, from my experience.
As for comment spam - yes it is annoying. I personally use spam karma which I find does a great job!
on July 3rd, 2008 at 12:24 pm
I think KeywordLuv is the happy medium between the blog owner and the blog commenter. I do like to comment a lot and while I’m at it, I still want to get a little extra link juice for the effort. And I place the feeds of websites with CommentLuv and KeywordLuv at the top of my feedreader so I think they can actually increase your readership.

I had heard of KeywordLuv before, but did not know how it worked. I see now one has to leave just their name in the name field, and then whatever site URL they have listed in the URL field, will link to their name.
Very clever.
on July 8th, 2008 at 12:49 pm
Hi, Opal:
Apparently i’m still not getting this one. I dont see my keyword in the URL field. Im trying it one more time, to test it out.
(sorry for the multiple comments, feel free to delete this extra one)
on July 8th, 2008 at 2:49 pm
Ok please don’t take this personal in any way, but I might add that a lot of people seem to be bothered by this, but if you really think about it. When people reject comments that are actually decent and have to do with the conversation they are actually hurting themselves. The reason is because the more comments that are left, and the more keywords that are within a comment, the more opportunity that post has to rank in google for more keyword combinations. I hope this makes sense.
Now as far as people just being irritated by not having a name, I am sure I could just make one up like Bob or Bill or whatever, but would it really make a major difference with how it helps your blog and benefits me as well? There are a lot of people who may just not want to use their name freely all over the internet. But many times I think its more important what a person has to say rather than who said it.
Once again, my 2 cents with all due respect for your blog at the same time.

With plugins like NOFF, CommentLuv and KeywordLuv everybody wins. If you want to lock down your blog where people must register first, activate a dispatched e-mail, then log-in and then wait for moderation…..just see how many comments you will get? near zero.
The plugins give back while getting something in return. The blog gets the benefit of traffic and growing content. The spiders will see the comments as content as well as the original article. The commentators get a little something in the form of a backlink for stopping by to take time and participate. I think it’s a win-win for everyone. Wordpress should install with these plugins by default !

Thanks for the useful post, and debate in the comments. There are pros and cons to KeywordLuv and CommentLuv. For me, CommentLuv has a slight advantage as it provides a deep-link to a blog post, as well as a general link to the homepage. Assuming you have keywords in your post-titles, you get the best of both.
