How Often Do You Update Your Computer Equipment?
If you had asked me seven years ago, my answer would have been not often. I used them daily, but I didn’t really need them to do too much. I was working out of the home most of my technical work was done away from the home. However, when I started my own business and started working for myself on a part-time basis my demands, in what I required, from my computer equipment changed. A little over a year ago I bought a 17″ MacBook Pro and an Epson Stylus Photo R2400.
Although I’ve had the Epson for thirteen months I have already outgrown it. I’ve taken numerous photos with my Nikon D80 and occasionally I sell my prints. Printing my own photos is possible with the Epsun Stylus R2400 the pictures are professional and do as good a job as the professional digital printing services. Over the months, I’ve found the demand for larger prints have been increasing. Although I was going to wait to upgrade to another photo printer, I’ll be making that purchase very soon. Initially, I was going to sell the Epson I do have but I’m thinking I might keep it. Heck, I might need a backup.
My 17″ MacBook Pro will be getting upgraded towards the fall and I believe I’ll be passing this one on to my daughter. One of the great things about working for myself is they can be written off as a business expense at the end of the year.
Question: How often do you upgrade your computer equipment?

Hi Opal - I have to admit that I mostly change mine when it breaks! I only ever use laptops now, instead of PC’s and I can’t seem to make them last more than a year.

I would guess that I update about every three to four years. Last year we moved from a desktop Gateway that we’d had about three years, maybe a little longer. Since we were going to be traveling, we bought two laptops and a wireless all-in-one printer/scanner/copier/fax. While the old system still worked well for most things, it was time to move to a faster system as the old one really bogged down editing photographs — and that was before the new Pentax K10D.

I’ll upgrade when I need to. The need is not there all the time. But now that you mention it. A new Video card card and external HD could be used right about now. :p

I like to try to keep either my desktop or my laptop at least somewhat up to date, so every year or two I will buy at least one new machine. I usually ebay the old one though, or sell it off to a friend or relative who needs it.
Always nice to have a shiny new toy!

I usually upgrade when something breaks. Very wise to keep the Epson as a back up. I have a Canon IP4200 that I will continue to use even when I can upgrade to a better photo printer. It does a really nice job with photos but limited in size.

I am so backwards when it comes to technology! I had my last computer for 5 years. I just bought my new one because I couldn’t even get the last 1 to turn on. lol

I upgraded my PC last year, as the other one was too slow, and I needed more GB for photo storage, and new programs.
So far I haven’t had a need to get a laptop, as I work at my desk for the biz, so the PC works great for both (work and blog). I worry that if I did have a laptop, I would end up getting “married” to it, and take it where ever I go. Yikes…I don’t want that.
As for other equipment, printers, faxes, etc, I replace them when they break.

Upgrades are few and far between for me. I tend to stick with something until it becomes deficient. For this reason, I will stay away from Vista for as long as possible. Each time I open up my ftp program, it beckons me with “an upgrade is available”. I just ignore it. The current version of the program works just fine. Upgrading just hasn’t become an issue. Security and redundancy, however, are big issues.

When I start freaking out about how slow my computer runs is generally when I upgrade. I should be acquiring a new 8-core Mac Pro within the next few weeks, so I think the slowness problem will be alleviated. At least for a few months. :)

You and I are in the same boat (except I use a Canon). I have several Epson printers including the 24″, and I have been and am still happy with their performance.
On the pc front I usually update every three years, but last time I got a loaded G5 and I have to admit I am still happy even though it would usually be time to upgrade.

Computer upgraders are a 18 month cycle for me. It’s not that I wear the machines out - but I find I always need more CPU and Memory for new applications. The longest I’ve gone is 3 years with the same IBM ThinkPad!
