Parenting: Monsters, Dogs, & Four-Year Olds, Oh My!

Posted on December 19th, 2007 in My little Angel, Personal by Vegan Momma

Mr. Bentley: Growling…
Me: Aiyana are you messing with Mr. Bentley?
Aiyana: I’m not really sure.
Me: Why don’t you go sit over there until you are sure.
Aiyana: Ok [She walks over and sits down in the chair.]

A few moments later

Aiyana: Mommy, I thought about it.
Me: Yes?
Aiyana: A monster pulled Mr. Bentley’s tail!
Me: Really? [I turned around to look at her trying to suppress my laughter.]
Aiyana: Yes!
Me: Remember Pinocchio and how he wasn’t telling the truth?
Aiyana: [Looks at me to gauge my reaction] Yes…
Me: Perhaps your hair will get shorter if you’re not telling the truth?
Aiyana: [Looking smug] “Mommy if that is true why isn’t your hair shrinking?” [She patiently explains to me] “What you’re saying is impossible.”
Me: [Slightly taken aback but then I thought of the perfect answer] Exactly similar to saying a monster pulled Mr. Bentley’s tail. That’s impossible.
Aiyana: [Sighs] Somehow I didn’t imagine our conversation ending this way…”

Ahh four-year olds what an age, eh? ;-)

Normally Aiyana and Mr. Bentley get along very well but once in a while she tries to mess with him.

That’s a funny story. It lets me know what I’m in store for. My 2.5 year old likes to make up stories whenever it’s time to go to bed. She’ll tell me she has to use the toilet, but I finally figured out how to catch her in that “tale.” I ask her, “Are you pretending?” She hasn’t yet figured out to lie about that, so she tells me, “Yes.” Soon that won’t work either.

Goodness - she is so smart. I think you just better hand her a college diploma and be done with it. Only four? What a great thinking process she already has going for her. Of course, you might want to keep her back a few years though until she has outgrown the doggy tail pulling thing. LOL. Awesome story! Stumbling.

    Cute story.

We spent a few hours this evening after getting to Wisconsin with our daughter, son-in-law, and grand-kids.

Since the grandkids are of the age when they are telling jokes, some of them the same jokes we told long ago, Karen had a new one ready for them:

What does the snowman eat for breakfast?

    answer: Snow flakes!

I know ;) corny, but perfect for the little ones ;)

I agree what a great story.

In the townhome we used to live in, I came downstairs just in time to see Nicole toss Mr Pants over her head to land in her bean bag. Mr Pants looked very wide eyed, but took it all very well.
    - Me - What in the heck are you doing to the cat?
    - Nicole completely happy - Look, he likes it!
    - Me - Don’t confuse liking something with complete confusion and tolerance.
Nicole is a sweet kid, but every once in a while she get’s this little demonic smile and you know something uncharacteristic and probably not good is going to happen. Shannon says Nicole gets this from me . . . I just smile and deny

    Theda K,
I think many of them go through this stage. It’s like a rite of passage designed to drive the parents nuts.

    Calamity,
Yes it is a great age, lol. They all are. :-)

    ebony,
We are already paying for it. Trust me! ;-) At times she is too smart for her own good.

    teeni,
At times I have to remind myself that she is only four years old because of the things she says and does. It will be interesting to see what she becomes. I’ll be right there encouraging her. :-)

    Mike,
I told the joke to Aiyana she loves it. ;-)

    - Me - Donâ??t confuse liking something with complete confusion and tolerance.

    Thomas,
I had to laugh that sounds like something you would say. My daughter gets that look into her eye also. The last time she got that look she was trying to stuff Indy into one of those paper towel tubes. She said the excited noises he was making was his happiness finding a new place to hide. I said, no he is mad and he is thinking of what he can do to you. My ferrets are very tolerant.
