Food Combining & Training Update
I worked out with my partner yesterday, and we had an excellent discussion about nutrition. D is in excellent shape and as I mentioned in a prior post he used to compete however recently he has been noticing that he has been feeling bloated in the mornings. I asked him what types of food he usually eats in the morning. I suspected it was improper food combining and after listening to what he was eating I believe that is his issue. I suggested to substitute foods he could eat to start his day.
Food Combining
Improper food combining can cause gas, bloating, diarrhea, stomach aches, headaches, etc., Long term effects of poorly combining foods can lead to colon cancer, eczema, ulcers, IBS as well as other complications.
My first meal of the day usually revolves around fruit. I don’t combine it with anything else. This is a meal that I eat alone. Fruit usually digests within thirty minutes after consumption. The problem when you combine them with other foods is the fruit tends to remain to ferment in the stomach acid. That’s something you definitely don’t want. It will be interesting to see how D does. I won’t be training with him until Monday, but I’ll be sure to check up with him this coming weekend by phone and hopefully by next week he won’t have the bloating.
Exercise Update
Training went exceptionally well yesterday. I enjoy working out with a good partner they can aid you in squeezing out added reps. We could help each other with this yesterday. D called me last evening and left a voice message stating his legs were killing him. Good! He had a leg injury a few years ago and has been trying to get it back to where it was. He did tell me I’m a tough workout partner, so is he. He commented how strong I am. I told him I used to be stronger (which really shocked the heck out of people because I’m very petite) but without a steady workout partner I couldn’t make it to the next level. I’m still stronger than the average but no where near what I used to be. Hopefully, with him, I’ll be able to.

I am glad you are enjoying your work outs! I should get with you and see if we could come up with a meal plan to help me. My IBS has been out of control for 2 months now! Living where I do, its hard to get a lot of things, but I bet between the 2 of us we could come up with something!

That is wonderful - sounds like your workout partner is a good match for you. And vice-versa. I know you eat a lot of fruit and veggies and was wondering how much of your food is grains like rice, barley, oats, wheat berries, quinoa, that kind of thing. I’m getting nosey now, huh? ;)

“fruit tends to remain to ferment in the stomach acid”.. You know, until you stated it I never would have thought about fruit causing stomach/ digestion problems.
I am always trying to eat better, I eat very poorly when not focusing on it. When I get busy I tend to only eat what I crave only when I have time, I am awful at making time to eat.
Lately in my attempts to eat more complete meals I have noticed that my stomach is upset afterwards- Is it possible for you stomach to shrink?

Maddy,
If you had the tofu with a green energy drink you would have been golden! ;-) (just joking)
Calamity,
I’ll follow up with you sometime next week. I definitely don’t mind giving suggestions, when I can. The one’s I help the most are those who are proactive about it and want to make changes. I could go on a long rant about those who say they want to make changes you give them the tools and they do nothing, lol. According, to research there is certain foods that should be avoided. I’ll try to write a post about it sometime next week. If I forget you can remind me. ;-)
teeni,
I don’t consume too many grains. Occasionally I’ll eat sprouted beans. I personally never understood why the portions (on some of the food pyramids) in the grains/cereals group were so high? Many of them rank high on the glycemic index. Breads, pastas, cereals, baked goods, etc. those are types of foods you want to eat sparingly esepcially if you are trying to regulate your blood glucose (thinking of diabetes here) levels. With the westernized cultures sedentary lilfestyles it’s no wonder why many of us are out of shape. We regularly reach for foods high on the glycemic index.
Those who consume foods high on the glycemic index usually also have higher levels of body fat. I find that fascinating. I mainly eat whole foods, not processed foods. My daily intake is vegetables, sea vegetables, and fruit. I occasionally grains, nuts, and seeds. I usually eat sprouted grains. The only form I eat whearberries in is as greens, sprouts, or juice.
My health has always been above average. Then again why would I want to be “average” judging by the stats the average person in westernized cultures is not healthy. In the back of my mind, I’ve always suspected that the powers that be have dumb down what healthy should be. A few years ago we were at the bottom of the list when it came to the healthiest nations. We were #100 I cannot remember who was #1.
Talina,
Yes, this happens to a lot of people. To prepare myself I always have quick foods in stock so if my body tells me I’m hungry I have something readily available.
Also, I don’t get as hungry anymore. When I upped my intake of greens a few years ago that did the trick. I also don’t have bad cravings. There have been many articles written about the subject. They state the reason are we are still “hungry” is because we haven’t feed it what it really needs so our body keeps craving those missing nutrients and many (unknowingly) will keep filling it with the wrong things.
I usually eat mono meals (one food at a time.) I haven’t had a stomach upset in years.
Regarding the stomach shrinking, you’ll have people that say it will, and others will say it won’t. If you do eat the right foods (for me it was just upping my greens), you won’t be as hungry. Regarding my food intake, I usually follow the ayurvedic principles. It makes the most sense to me. I’ll post an article about that this coming week.
Tricotine,
I definitely agree with you. At times they can push you when you just don’t feel like squeezing out additional reps. They can also help you correct your form. D corrected me a few times during our interval training.

Well, you just gave me a lot of “food for thought.” LOL. I never realized how high glycemic grains really were. It’s funny because I knew it about bread and other starches. I still have lots to learn. But I still am eating way healthier than I ever did so at least that’s good. ;)

The food combining really does work well, at least it always has for me and I have a picky digestive system.
