Leg Exercise: 12/09/07

Conversation With My Mom

Me: I have a few projects that I need to complete on Sunday.
Mom: Sunday’s a day of rest.
Me: Err, not if you have work to complete.

I took on a freelance project recently. I’m enjoying it immensely it allows me to be creative. I like that. Later this morning after I’m finished the project I’ll be heading to the gym. I actually skipped yesterday. I would go, but I decided to hold off until today. Thus, far I’ve been meeting my goal of getting into the gym at least five days weekly.

Although my gym workouts are similar to the ones, I do at home. When I work out at the gym, I have the added bonus of using a spotter when I need assistance with my last reps with free weights. I don’t have that type of luxury at home. Surprisingly when I worked out of the home, it was much easier for me to get in my fitness time at the gym. I find working for myself I don’t have as much free time so I plan it wisely.

When I worked out of the home, I would exercise before I went to work. Bally’s Total Fitness opens at 5:30 or I would manage to squeeze in a fitness workout after work. The Bally’s I go to does make it easier for those who have children. They have a daycare on the premises. My daughter has never been there.

What’s my workout today? Leg workout? My legs are very strong. Depending on my goal I might shoot for high reps low weight or low reps high weight. Today I’ll be training heavy which means I’ll be bringing along my weight belt. When I train at home I don’t max out simply because I don’t have a partner; however, since I’ll be at the gym I’ll be able to get someone to spot me during my squats.

Exercises I’ll be doing today

Squats
I love squats! It works my quads, hamstrings, glutes, and hips. It also works my back and to a certain extent my abdominal muscles.

Leg Press
The leg press I use at Bally’s has you laying down, and you are pushing the weight upwards. This effectively works my quads, hamstrings, and glutes. Occasionally I’ll modify this and turn it into a calf press.

Lunges
This is another exercise that I enjoy. It does requite the ability to balance. If you are doing this for the first time use lighter weight to get the feel of the movement involved. This exercise works on quads, hamstrings, and glutes.

Leg Extensions
This is a machine I love to hate. It does its job well. One of the best machines I’ve used for isolating my quadriceps. I have great muscle detail between the individual leg segments of my quad muscles, and I owe a lot of that to this simple machine.

Lying Leg Curls
I receive a lot of comments about my legs. I try a variety of different exercises to target my muscles. This exercise is excellent for developing muscle detail behind your legs. I love seeing that. I feel the burn (lactic acid) on this machine very quickly. I usually have a partner to help me push out those last few reps.

Stay focused during your workouts if you get sidetracked pick yourself up and try again. You only have one body take care of it. After all exercise is good for your health.

Good for you for having a creative project. It’s nice to work that side of the brain every so often. ;) Does reading about working out count as exercise? Cuz if it does, then I’m all worked out after reading your post. heehee. Just kidding. I actually like doing some of the exercises you mentioned but without machines at home. That may change though as I join a gym for the first time in my life very soon.

You have done a great training. I some times do the same like you did, but only once a week at my home. I rather like to take a swim for relaxing my tension.

    teeni,
You’re funny! Did my exercise make you that tired or that bored? Perhaps a combination, eh? ;-)
Hey that is good news joining a fitness center. It’s a great way to get in a workout when you cannot get outdoors and do physical activity.

    agassi123,
Swimming is great exercise. They have a pool at the gym where I go to, but I don’t go. I’m too weirded out about what people might be doing in there. Yes, I know they put chemicals in the pool to combat that but the gross out factor is still very high, at least for myself.

If anyone is ready for an advanced leg exercise that is really tough, try doing squats on a stability ball!

Now that is a serious burn! It takes a while to get the balance down at first, but once you master that part you are off to the races.

Just make sure you don’t have to walk much the next day!

That is one great workout. I do something similar that you do. I love going to the gym, it used to be Golds gym and now the Sports clubs. Guess they didn’t want to pay the franchise fee. Anyways, I go to the gym almost everyday and I switch from upper body to lower body. I do something like you when I work out the legs and lower body. And I can tell you when I am done and during, I do get that burn. Isn’t it an awesome feeling, know that you did something to get that. I love it. Then the next day it is the upper (arms, shoulders, etc). I really focus all of my work on the muscle for a golf swing. Since starting to do this 3-4 years ago, I have gained around 40-50 yards off the tee (and still straight, thank goodness), which has really helped my game. Anyway, keep it up and I will too. See you at the gym….
    Tim ;)
