Maryland: Our First Snowfall Of Fall 2007

First Snowfall of Fall 2007

We’ve received our first snowfall today. I took this photo about thirty minutes ago. I couldn’t stay outside long because my daughter is still sleeping. I don’t recall us having snow, at this time, last year. My daughter and I hung the rest of the Christmas lights this afternoon. We hung them “her way” so they definitely look “interesting”. I’m sure the arrangement might cause some raised eyebrows from our neighbors but who cares? I’m happy that my daughter is creative and enjoys expressing herself.

Fall and winter our my favorite seasons and I absolutely adore snow. I think world is beautiful covered with a nice blanket of snow. My daughter and I enjoy being outside building snowpeople and having snowball fights.

We always end our outdoor time by coming into the house. I usually have a pot of soup on ready to be served. Today we’ll be having vegan chili. It’s similar to the vegan black bean chili I made a at the end of October. I’m hoping this batch of Vegan chili lasts longer than that one did. It was delicious.

Cold weather and warm bowls of soup seem to go together don’t they? I also made freshly baked bread this afternoon. Yes, it’s vegan. It’s hard to find vegan bread in the stores. It almost seems standard to add animal products to the dish. Aiyana, my daughter, will tell you that bread is perfect for dipping into the chili. Hopefully I’ll be able to post a picture and a recipe on my whole foods website either today or tomorrow.

What am I thankful for? I’m thankful for a home where my daughter and I live. It keeps us out of the elements. I’m thankful for being healthy. Oh there are too many things to mention here.

Question: What are you thankful for?

I checked the date and it’s definitely 5th December. Now far be it from me to cast aspersions on a fellow American, but I am given to understand that Fall translates to Autumn and Winter is still Winter. So this would be the first ‘fall’ of Winter?

That aside, bowls of something yummy [preferable free of substances that need to be chewed] are very welcome around here [at least for me]

As for the thankful [don't we do that at Thanksgiving?] probably far too many to list. For the moment, happy to be heading out the door with my daughter for a little one on one time hurray!

[I know that this post was specifically designed to torment the foreigners]
    Cheers

    From Wikipedia:

    1) “Almost all English-language calendars, going by astronomy, state that winter begins on the winter solstice, and ends on the spring equinox.” There’s still two weeks of autumn left.
    2) “Contemporary meteorology takes winter to be the months of June, July, and August in the Southern Hemisphere, and December, January, and February in the Northern Hemisphere.” We’re 5 days into winter by this way of figuring.

I like the meteorological definition. It’s simpler and you don’t have to check the calender to see what day the solstice is.

Our grandkids have been getting a lot of snow this week. Karen got them a Christmas present that fits for their new home in the north. It’s a kit with a stove-pipe hat, a plastic carrot and other accessories for outfitting one sharp snowman. I think they’ll like it.

That photo is simply breathtaking! I can almost FEEL the cold… Do you have a cozy warm fire going? I am getting ready to light mine and we don’t even have snow here yet. Our storm is supposed to move in tomorrow evening starting with rain then switching to snow.

Strangely enough we usually have winter weather starting here in Flagstaff, AZ more in October& November (we kind of skip autumn) so this winter/ fall seems late for us… Well keep warm and enjoy your one on one time with your daughter!

My buddy Darrel told me about the snow this morning. He lives in Bethesda. I think there was some light snow up in the mountains not too long ago, but if we see any, it won’t be until after Christmas. Though I bet it will snow for Christmas since I plan on driving to Arkansas. LOL.

I’ve been sick today, so today I am thankful I have a job that lets me work flex hours so I can make up my time this weekend and not have to take a precious vacation day.

Okay - I’m trying again. I wanted to say that I consider it winter as soon as I see snow. LOL. And your photo is beautiful! I forgot what else I had put in my original comment that got booted but I’m sure it was funny so just insert witty comment of your choice here. ;)

I hope we don’t get snow as I am driving FROM Arkansas to Wisconsin and then BACK to Arkansas. We’ll be back at the house in the evening on Christmas Eve. (We must be crazy.)

    Maddy,
Mike pretty much nailed it. I follow the actual date. I can get anal at times.

I’ve got to torment someone. ;-)

    Mike Goad,
You know you are a wealth of information. I follow the actual date.

    Talina,
Nope I don’t have a fire going yet although I do have a wood stove in the basement. It makes the most delightful baked burritos. Yum!

    Bush Mackel,
How quickly I hae forgotten right? I hope you and others get to work fine. Tomorrow will make my one year anniversary working for myself full-time. Hmm, I feel like celebrating.

    DragonLady,
Bethesda I haven’t been out that way in a while. One of my favorite gaming companies, BethSoft, is located in Bethesda.
I hope you are feeling better and it’s good that you can make up your time. In the corporate world I was able to do that. I loved it!

    teeni,
I’m glad you were able to post! :-)
You know you set yourself up for what is about to come right…
So, if it snows in the spring time does that make it winter again? LOL I couldn’t resist that.

I’ll be by your blog later today or early tomorrow morning. It’s all dependent on Aiyana.

I was there briefly today but then wasn’t able to comment. I usually spend a lot of time reading your posts/comments. I’ve missed my visting blogging buddy so it was nice stopping by your website.

i thought i saw a few tiny snowflakes when i left my house this morning, but i just dismissed it as an hallucination due to sleep deprivation. but later someone confirmed that there were flurries, and we’re expecting more tonight (slight chance).
not a big fan of snow myself. beautiful when it first falls then just turns into one big nasty headache!

    and that’s a gorgeous pic!

I’m not a big fan of snow or cold weather, but I must say that this photo made me homesick in a way. I just moved to California from the east coast a month ago, and I’d forgotten how beautiful the snow can be.

Hi VM—it’s a lovely photo and helps me remember some of the beauty of fall/winter when I start feeling that it’s too cold (smile).

I’m really a spring/fall kinda guy, but thank you for the visual reminder!

I got a bit more than you did. I think after it was all over it ended up being a couple of feet.

I hate snow, so if you want. You can come on up here and take it all away. :p
