The Final Countdown ~ Mentoring

By Opal Tribble on May 29, 2007 · 3 Comments

It’s hard to believe that I’ve been with my girls since October 2006. I have only two more sessions with them today and next Tuesday as they the next rung on their academic ladder (sixth grade) they will be paired with their very own mentor.

In fifth grade, they begin in a group mentoring setting. It’s fascinating seeing the different personalities, and it can be a challenge. You know what has bothered me? A few of the girls act as if we owe them something. These are also the same ones that don’t say thanks to us, the mentors, for supplying snacks, transportation, gifts, projects, etc., in our sessions.

When I was their age, even younger, this was automatic it’s something I was taught to do. My daughter has said please and thanks since she could talk. People have always commented o how polite she is. I’ve taught her the importance of acknowledging what others do for her.

Perhaps some of them aren’t being taught this important lesson? A few of the girls have gotten on some of the other mentees for not saying a simple thank you. Imagine that.

If they haven’t they’re learning it now, from me. A person isn’t obligated to share their thing with you. They usually do it because they love sharing with others. Acknowledge this! It bothered me more that some of them didn’t thank A for the things she did.

Initially, I would have another craft day but instead it’s going to be a time to give thanks to their mentee. She’s back in Missouri. Today I’ll supply paper, stencils, pictures, and I’ll have them send her cards telling her how much they appreciate what she’s done.

I’m looking forward to spending time with the girl I’ll be mentoring as I mentioned in previous posts I knew who I wanted to mentor on a one on one basis almost since the beginning of our sessions. D has much potential, just like all our girls, and she will go far I cannot wait to see what she does.
