Mommy I want…

Posted on May 24th, 2007 in My little Angel, Personal, Photography by Vegan Momma

My daughter Aiyana

Aiyana has been on a hummus kick so today I made her black bean hummus. It’s delicious, nutritious, and quite filling. She gobbles it up fairly quickly.

While I was talking to a relative earlier today I mentioned her upcoming meal. Our conversation went a little something like this…

Relative: Do you mean she doesn’t eat any meat?
Me: No she doesn’t (In my mind I’m thinking how many times have we had this same conversation and haven’t I always given you the same answer?)
Me: She eats the same thing I eat.
Relative: Well that’s different your an adult and you can do that.
Me: ? Err come again

Relative: Well she’s developing and she needs nutrients
Me: Which are definitely being met through the large variety of foods we eat. My daughter is healthier than most people I know. She gets her calcium/amino acids from greens, beans, & sea vegetables. Her iron & whole host of other nutrients from vegetables & fruit. Her health fats are received from nuts, avocados, seeds, and olives, olive oil, and raw coconut oil. You know I stay on top of our nutritional needs. (smiling)

Relative: Yes you always have.
Me: ??? So why are you feeding me the meat lobbyist propaganda? Back the info up with reliable facts don’t deliver the nonsense (I said this last part jokingly.) You already know, to name a few, that the American Heart Association, as well American Cancer Society have said that a plant based diet effectively meets the needs of all people. Right?
Relative: Well yeah…

After I got off the phone I thought to myself…
Ok relative when will you get it? You know my daughter is very healthy. She has rarely been sick and the times when she has it’s been because of the shots she received.

Yah know I could have questioned her health choices but I didn’t even go there or the choices she makes for her grandchildren but I didn’t even go there. She’s not in the best of health and some of her ailments are directly related to what she chooses to eat but guess what. I didn’t do it.

She knows the choices she makes aren’t the best for her health but she still makes poor food choices.  I cannot make her change she has to take that first step but I’ll definitely help if she asks my assistance. Every now and then she will.

I was a Vegetarian for quite sometime, and it was probably the best decision I ever made. I’ve got to get back on the regimentation. Your daughter looks gorgeous, skin tone attests to her health. Good going mom!

Funny. You get a lot of conversations like that when you homeschool too. My favorite is: Well don’t they need to go to school for socialization?

I always say that I don’t want my kids to be socialists :)

    That’s quite a conversation about a meal.

    Bobby,
I became veggie in 1992. A few of my friends/relatives are shocked that I don’t miss animal products but I don’t. I rarely think of myself as “vegan” unless it’s pointed out. You would think with the website Vegan Momma I would think about it all the time.

    UNG,
Ha! I figured that. I’ve already explained the reasons why she is going to be homeschooled. She already knows more than she’ll learn in even the private schools I was thinking of sending her to. It makes sense to keep doing what I’ve been doing at home. My relatives shut up about the “social” aspect when I told them if a child was doing too much socializing in school what in the world were they learning? My daughter is very social and makes friends very easily.

    Ron,
Compared to my other aunt I got off easy today.
That wonderful incident happened when my cousin was in town to visit last year. A very long story. I ranted about that one to. I left that event early because my other aunt just wouldn’t let it go. I couldn’t even enjoy myself. Hee! Hee! In a sense I can understand. It’s different and strange, to them but after a while it gets very old. I just want to eat in peace.

Opal, if they haven’t understood in 15 years undoubtly they aren’t going to understand. It’s the same way I deal with my religious beliefs therefore I keep it to myself with family so I don’t have to hear the almighty.

    Beth,
I know. Actually they haven’t known about it that long. Perhaps five or six of those years. I wasn’t trying to hide it. It just never came up.
My other aunt did call me back a few days later to apologize.
She’s on to something new now. She doesn’t understand how I can make money working from home. LOL I have my own business but in her mind I need to be working for someone else. LOL

Unfortunately some people will never get it…mostly because they don’t want to “get it”. For some - if it’s different that the norm they don’t want to know. They don’t want to hear it. They don’t think it will work. bah humbug! I applaud you for doing and saying what you do! ;)

Thumbs up on the black bean hummus, btw! ;)

    It was fabulous!

    Mary,
Sure! I’ll have to make another batch since my daughter scarfed that down fairly quickly! ;)
