What are we eating?

Yesterday, on my way to mentoring, I gave my buddy Heber a call. His posts challenge me to keep thinking outside the box. He gives me a different perspective on many issues and I like that. I don’t need to be around someone that thinks exactly the way I do. That would be boring.
I worked with “Hebe” last year and really enjoyed the time I spent getting to know him. He’s on fire and one can’t help but get caught up in that passion. Not only does he talk about change he’s actively out there trying to turn his dreams into a reality.
Guess what? He’s changed his eating habits which I think is very cool. Nope he’s not vegan but he’s making healthier choices these days.
During our conversation he mentioned an article titled What are we Eating. It’s found in the Independent Reader. In fact he sent the file to me this morning. He said I would really appreciate this article because it focuses on issues that I’ve been talking about all along.
For the past several months I’ve been pretty quiet, blog wise, when it comes to food politics, pharmaceutical drugs, our health care system, etc. but it’s about to get loud again.
I’ll be doing most of my ranting at The Raw & The Cooked & The Raw Review but I’m not about to leave this site, Vegan Momma, out of it.
Later today I’m hoping that I have the chance to post my thoughts about the article.

You’ll be interested to know that I’ve changed my diet as well. More and more veggies and fruit, most of it raw or barely cooked. Constitutes a large portion of my diet.

That’s wonderful news! I think I remember you mentioned adding more of both into your daily lifestyle.

Harmomia,
It’s always good news when people start reclaiming their health. Unfortunately many people put off their health until tomorrow when they need to start taking care of it today. Tomorrow is not promised to us.
In 1997 the USA was at the bottom of the heap when it came to our health. we were #100. In some cases diseases have triple in less than forty years. Apalling! We have more control of our health than we realize.

Statistics are scary but true…eh? I am by no means a pro and everyday there are things I can improve but I try to improve myself somehow each day. More and more as I get older, too. I guess the sooner the better tho! I still believe having support and accountability is a good thing too…giving a shoulder to lean on ya know!?
People like you! You help me with a lot and I appreciate it! ;)

Hi Opal, I just found your blog, enjoyed reading about the vegan/good posts especially. I’ve been reading a ton lately about the “western” diet and how it seems to be the cause of all America’s ill health, like diabetes, cancer, etc. I even got the book “In Defense of Food” and read it on a plane ride the other week. I seriously feel like it’s going to change a huge part of my life, in terms of what the heck I eat everyday for the rest of my life. I’ve gone vegan for months at a time during the past year or so, but this book has convinced me that not only are animal-food stuff killing us, but the flip side is true, which is that fruits, veggies, beans, etc are the way to go. I’ve always liked cookbooks, but now I am actually using them! In December I went back to the Ghana for the 3rd time, and only now it’s dawning on me that their food culture is all about whole, fresh foods, prepared by hand, slowly and usually by more than one person. My fist visits there, I thought — what a waste of time! But now I know that they are the ones who know better. Anyway, interesting blog, thanks. –Scott
