Evangelist Jerry Falwell, a prominent and controversial leader of the U.S. Christian right, died Tuesday. He founded the Moral Majority in 1979, which brought millions of born-again Christians into the center of political activism. <NPR>
I was surprised and slightly sad to hear this news today. Although there were many issues I disagreed with him on I have fond memories of him. I went to Liberty University for four years.
I remember Rev. Falwell as being extremely approachable. I would see him often passing through the DeMoss Hall. He was very down to earth and a likable man. He always had a smile and was always willing to talk to us students.
Through Liberty University & Thomas Road Baptist Church, a lot of outreach work was done. A few of their programs were assisting pregnant teens & aiding those suffering from addictions. They covered a lot of ground with their outreach programs.

I went to high school in Northern Virginia and my boyfriend at the time went to a Baptist school in Fairfax, so a LOT of my friends went to Liberty back in the 80s and loved it.

I went to Liberty from 1988 - 1991 I remember a lot of the locals would come onto the campus for the various events that were going on. It was a nice way to meet people outside of the university.
It’s a huge campus and they keep on building.

It amazes me the negative, hateful things so many are publishing about him in his death. “.. I wish there was a Hell so he could burn in it.”
It fascinates me that those who accused him of being a hate monger have more venom and hate for him than they accuse him of having espoused.

Jon,
I know. That point seems to be lost on people like that. I forgot it doesn’t apply to them. They can hate whomever they want. It’s perfectly acceptable at least in their twisted minds.
