My Colonics Experience

Posted on May 23rd, 2006 in Personal by Vegan Momma

Some argue that colonics are not needed because our bodies are designed to do away with this debris. Oh really, I always say then why are so many people dying from colon cancer on a yearly basis. Why are laxatives the number one drug that people purchase each year? I also hear, Well I eat very healthy or I eliminate several times throughout the day.

I usually say whether you had any time when you ate unhealthy you might have some cleaning to do, although I have been a vegetarian since 1992 and ate healthy (I ate healthier than many vegetarians I know today) I knew that I probably had some gunk that was not being eliminated completely. When we think of cleansing we have to keep in mind that the body has several channels of elimination. These channels are the liver, lungs, lymphatic system, blood, skin, colon, and kidneys. I always think of dirty dishes that have baked on food. A normal cleaning usually won’t get rid of this baked on goo. I always need to do extras to get that dish clean. Hmm, could this happen to some material in my stomach/intestines? Ok, I was now starting to have serious doubts that my healthy eating habits were effectively eliminating everything that needed to be out of my system.

I’m a whole food diva. I eat very little-processed foods. Months go by without me consuming processed foods. I was beginning to question how clean my colon really was I knew it was time to give colonics a try. I rationalized that doing this procedure I would find out if I was “clean inside.” ;-) Personally, I think everyone should undertake some type of internal cleansing to thoroughly clean out all of our elimination channels.

Birute Castro
Ok back to my appointment…
My colonics went very well! I had a wonderful colonics hydrotherapist names Birute Castro. She’s from Lithuania and has been in the USA for six years. She’s a nurse and a certified Colon Hydrotherapist. She was fabulous and put me at ease. When I arrived I filled out paperwork it asks you about your medical history.

According to the USA medical standards, I’m in excellent health. I breezed right through the paperwork. Birute led me to a back room where the procedure was to be done. I really like the facility there is plenty of soft lights, hardwood floors, flowers, etc., it was beautiful. I found it soothing. Once I arrived in the room, she showed me where the bathroom was located.  Before she closed the door she asked me to remove my pants and put on a robe that opened up in the back. I used the bathroom and had a bowel movement when I came back into the room where the procedure was to be done Birute asked me to step up on the table.

disposeable speculum
Disposable Speculum
She talked about the procedure and then instructed me to lie on my left side. She lubricated the speculum and gently inserted it into my rectum. The speculum is inserted about 2.5 to 3 inches into your rectum. The speculum has the diameter of a health bowel movement and the rectum usually receives the speculum easily with gentle pressure. My colon was not filled with water at this time she made sure I had a good fit and to make sure I was relaxed. After a few minutes she asked me to roll on my back and to bend my knees. I thought it would be uncomfortable, but it wasn’t. The speculum was secured by a strap that rested on my body to prevent slippage.

The machine looked similar to this equipment and was stationed on a table.

I did not see the bottom part since the machine was built into the table. I think the one used at their facility is a newer or different model. I noticed some things that were different on the theirs, but you get the idea. :-)

Birute closed the release valve on the equipment to create pressure in the system. This pressure is what allows the therapist to start gently filling your colon. The pressure used for filling the colon will generally run from 0.25 to 1.25 psi (pounds per square inch). This is very gentle (often much gentle than an enema you would give yourself at home). The FDA requires that the pressure never exceeds 2 psi as a safety margin. The equipment they use has a safety mechanism that automatically diverts water out of the system at the point it reaches two psi to ensure your safety and the health of your colon.

Birute introduced warm water (about 102 degrees) in my colon. She told me to let her know when I was ready to release. It did not take long. I had a lot of gas! When I released the water and fecal material, from my colon, passed through the large tube and into the equipment. Within the equipment, there is a view tube that is well lit from behind. Cool huh? This makes it possible to visually examine what is coming out of you. I was amazed at some things I saw for me this was an important part of the colonics experience observing the material that passed through the equipment. The fecal material goes directly into the sewage system. It was fascinating. I was seeing stuff that I know I had not eaten in years! I was not too surprised that this would happen since I have really been focused on my cleansing and incorporating various herbs to break up the buildup. I had suspected some things might have been held into my colon.

The remaining fills was done with cooler water. Birute kept the water running at all times to help break up material and to keep my colon relaxed. In all Birute did about 8-12 fills and releases during my 45 minute session. I did not know I had that much internal gas, but I was able to see it pass though the tube. During the last 17 minutes, she started massaging my abdomen. I do a fairly good job of listening and knowing what’s up with my body. I told her how I felt a blockage during my abdominal massages, and I strongly felt that fecal material was lodged in that area. She went to work kneading the right side of my abdomen and a few seconds later I saw all this brown material pass through the clear tube. There was also a marble sized white object and other colored pieces that passed through. I believe adding the massage enhanced my colonic experience and it was evident when I saw the increase in fecal material from the massage. Wow! We chatted throughout the procedure.

She mentioned that I should think of coming back based on what was passing through the tube. I laughed and told her I knew I would be coming back and explained the cleansing I was undergoing. I talked about the high amount of raw foods (fruits and vegetables) I was eating. I mentioned the specific herbs that I had been taking to assist in softening and dislodging the material that might have been layering my intestines. She told me that my hard work was paying off.

After the procedure Birute instructed me to go to the bathroom. She even provided me with a stool to prop up my legs while I was on the toilet. She explained how I should use it. I was impressed not too many people realize how poorly toilets are designed. I always use a stool at home. Once I was finished, I came out to the room where the procedure was done, and she gave me a probiotics to take along with water. She gave me a big hug. I really like Birute we chatted throughout the procedure. I set up my follow up appointment for Monday, May 22. I have read that many people feel light after their first colonics. I did not feel this way.

I felt great that my cleansing was coming along so well, but I knew more had to be done. I had a feeling that the colonics would dislodge material during the procedure, and I was correct.

Saturday I only had one bowel movement. I usually have one after each meal. I had read that this happens so I was not worried. I also started feeling gassy and my stomach became bloated, once again this was not a cause for concern since I knew my body was working to eliminate the buildup of fecal material. It was uncomfortable. My body was doing a lot of work.

The next day, Sunday, I went into my garden and picked enough wheat grass to make four ounces of juice. I also picked kale and collards and ginger to this blend it made about 8 ounces. I drank it slowly and that really helped release gas and aided in elimination. I was going until I went back to my appointment yesterday. After my appointment yesterday I felt light. I might have lost 1-3 pounds. I had a feeling that I would not lose a lot of weight. I’m 5′ 100 pounds. I don’t have too much to lose. I have read that people who are slim usually don’t lose a lot of weight during this procedure. This was not the reason I had it done. Over the years, I had done numerous hours of research online, and I read numerous books. I intuitively knew that this would benefit me, and it did.

Vegan Restaurants Are Thriving in the Black Community

There are times when I become frustrated at the lack of representation of minorities in Vegetarian publications. We talked about this recently on the “Sistah Vegan forum. It was nice to hear from others who shared my frustration. I remember being excited when an Indian couple was represented in VegNews! I was so pleased I wrote them expressing how happy I was seeing a “minority” Vegan couple represented. I also asked them to regularly feature other “minorities” in their publication. We are out there. I don’t think “we” should have to start our own publications in order to be represented. I have to admit I was mildly surprised that this was even a problem within the vegetarian community since “equality” is mentioned a lot as well as the similarities between “slavery” and “farmed animals”.
